Yet, dermatologists still advise the public to practice sun protection to prevent skin cancer.

At a recent American Academy of Dermatology’s Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month news conference, dermatologist Darrell S. Rigel, M.D., clinical professor, New York University Medical Center in New York City, debunked the myths surrounding
living longer, we want the years to be active ones filled with energy and vitality and free from disease. Ideally, the source of vitamins, minerals and nutrients should be from your diet. However, poor food choices, processed foods, sodas and excess sweets have become the norm for millions. Besides, even with a well-balanced diet, studies find that food nutrient values have been declining for decades because of soil depletion.

Choosing one of the high-quality nutritional vitamin supplements helps fill the ‘gaps’ in nutrition that everyone has. The ingredients used in vitamin nutritional supplements can be one of two types, either natural or synthetic. Numerous studies have shown that the natural nutritional vitamin supplements have a higher potency than the synthetic ingredients. However, since the synthetic ingredients are cheaper, most manufacturers use synthetic ingredients. It’s no wonder that studies done based on the cheap one-a-day vitamins show that little if any benefits will be obtained using these products.

The essential nutrients that the body requires are extensive and are much more than just vitamins and minerals. High quality daily nutritional vitamin supplements should include amino acids like L-Carnosine, alpha lipoic acid and acetyl L-Carnitine that provide proven benefits. Other anti-aging nutrients backed by studies that the body needs and will use are antioxidants such as quercetin, bioflavanoids, certain herbal extracts, enzymes to improve the vitamin nutritional supplements absorbability and so on. And these nutrients must be in the correct proportions to each other.

There ARE manufacturers that design and make supplements available online that provide the broad-spectrum nutritional vitamin supplements at reasonable prices. Instead of looking for the cheapest, look for the best value. There is one manufacturer in particular that uses pharmaceutical grade ingredients, many supported by clinical studies and at very reasonable prices. Ingredients are even linked to relevant clinical studies on their website. The ‘delivery’ system used is called ‘enteric coating’ which allows absorption to take place in the small intestines instead of the stomach since stomach acids destroy most of the nutrients.

Taking quality vitamin nutritional supplements should be about better health and energy, freedom from illness, improved sexual vigor and slowing the aging process. Learn as much as you can about ways you can help protect yourself from premature aging and the role that nutritional vitamin supplements will have in your health every day. Eat as healthy as you can, stay active, get sufficient quality sleep and keep taking the best nutritional supplements you can find.

Most parents’ think their children are eating a fairly healthy and if not they throw their hands up in the air and give up. They then ply their children with multivitamins. No it’s not a bad thing however, many children think that vitamins are candies, especially now that they come in gummi candy, gumballs, and cute animal and cartoon character shapes. - This
to take supplements, some of these may include, some vegetarians, people who drink large amounts of alcohol, drug users, athletic people, pregnant and lactating women and elderly people.

Are you using Vitamins and Minerals like medicine pills?

There seems to be a trend occurring where it is believed that taking massive or “mega-doses” of various vitamins will work like medicine to cure certain conditions. For example, vitamin C has been thought of as a cure for the common cold for generations and in fact you were probably even told this by your mother at some stage. Despite extensive research on this it has yet to be proven

Vitamins from food are best

Research indicates that most of the vitamins you get from the food you eat are better than those contained in pills. Even though the vitamins in supplements are synthesized to the exact chemical composition of naturally occurring vitamins, they still don’t seem to work as well. For this reason when selecting a vitamin supplement it is important that a natural vitamin supplement is selected

Research has shown that a food component that has a particular effect on the body when present in food may not have the same effect when it is isolated and taken as a supplement. This could be because the vitamins and minerals in foods are also influenced by other components of the food, not just the ‘active ingredient’.

Food is a complex source of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, which all work together. Supplements tend to work in isolation. Phytochemicals (plant chemicals) are an important component of food. They are thought to reduce the incidence of cancer and heart disease. Supplements do not provide the benefits of phytochemicals and other components found in food. Taking vitamin supplements is no substitute for a varied diet

A short term measure

Taking vitamin supplements should be viewed as a short term measure. The long term use of supplements can lead to symptoms of overdosing or poisoning. If you feel that you could be lacking in certain vitamins and minerals, it may be better to look at changing your diet and lifestyle rather than reaching for supplements.

This being said if you are a highly active person you may need to constantly supplement your vitamin intake as you will be using your sources much quicker then the average person.

You should always consult you doctor if you are thinking of starting a vitamin supplement routine

Specific medical conditions that can benefit from vitamin supplementation

There are specific medical conditions that are known to benefit from certain vitamin supplementation. In this case it is recommended that you consult your doctor first and then if you are searching for a vitamin supplement ensure that you are using a natural well formulated supplement.

Recent scientific studies have outlined some specific areas that can benefit largely from vitamin supplementation. These are:

If all women of childbearing age used multi vitamins with folic acid, it should be possible to reduce the current incidence of neural tube birth defects like spina bifida by as much as 70%.

The routine use of multi vitamins and mineral supplements by the elderly could improve immune function and thus reduce infectious disease, potentially cutting in half the total number of days they are sick.

Supplementation with calcium and vitamin D could reduce the rate of hip fracture among older people by at least 20%-meaning 40,000 to 50,000 fewer hip fractures each year in the United States-for an average annual savings of $1.5 to $2 billion.

The potential cost savings of a prevention-oriented approach to health and diet are tremendous. A 1997 analysis predicted that if the occurrence of cardiovascular disease, stroke and hip fracture were delayed five years, total U.S. health care cost savings could equal $89 billion annually.

While the addition of a multi vitamin would benefit most people, different additional supplements should be chosen based on the specific life stage, gender or lifestyle of the individual. For example, though calcium is generally important for all men and women, it is particularly critical for children building bone mass and elderly people seeking to preserve it.

Things to remember when taking supplements

Vitamins are organic compounds used by the body in small amounts for various metabolic processes.

Vitamin supplements can’t replace a healthy diet.

Those who may need vitamin supplements include pregnant and lactating women, people who consume alcohol in amounts over those recommended as safe, drug users and the elderly.

When taking vitamins try to take a natural brand that follows all of the FDA guidelines.

by: Brigitte Smith

Just like humans, almost all pets do benefit from a vitamin supplement. And just as there has been considerable controversy in the medical fraternity over whether humans need extra vitamins, so too do many vets dispute the need for nutritional supplements for pets.

The argument usually goes something like this: “The majority of commercial petfoods contain added vitamins. So
even though your pet’s diet may be inadequate, the vitamins added to pet food compensates for this.”

Wrong! Many human breakfast cereals contain added vitamins - they’re sprayed on after the processing. And it has been established that you would ingest more vitamins by eating the packaging than you do by eating the cereal inside. It’s a gimmick. A gimmick to get you to buy the cereal and feel comfortable in the “knowledge” that you’re getting some vitamins even if you don’t eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. But guess what? It doesn’t compensate. Even the fruit and vegetables we buy today have very little in them by way of vitamins and minerals, by comparison to what they should ideally contain. Unless you’re buying organic fruit and veges direct from the farm and eating them the same day, you’re not optimising your vitamin intake from fresh food.

This is why many of us now routinely supplement our diet with vitamin tablets, even when we eat a balanced diet. If we don’t, we’re likely to be vitamin deficient to some degree. That’s why cancer, heart disease, and other degenerative conditions are at an all time high, and are still on the increase. A hundred years ago these conditions were unknown.

It’s the same for our pets. In fact, they’re generally in a worse position than us in relation to an adequate intake of vitamins. That’s because, contrary to what many of the so-called “authorities” will have you believe, the garbage that’s sold to us as pet food is causing your pet irreparable harm. So the fact that it may have some “added vitamins” is just a complete gimmick, and absolutely worthless from your pet’s health’s point of view.

It’s vital that you feed your pet something as close to its natural diet as possible, and in most cases that’s still not enough. Supplementation is essential.

Your pet’s natural diet is exclusively raw food. Is that what you’re feeding your pet? Or do you opt for the convenience of commercial pet food some or all of the time? Unless you can replicate what your pet would eat in the wild, you owe it to your pet to give a vitamin supplement. And who can replicate exactly what they’d eat in the wild? In exactly the same proportions?

No one. So you know what that means? You do need to give your pet a vitamin supplement.

For information on vitamins for pets, go to: http://www.HealthyHappyDogs.com/Vitamins

Vitamins for pets have produced remarkable results in animals with specific health concerns such as allergies or other skin irritations, dull coat, lack of energy, as well as much more serious problems like cataracts, epileptic seizures, tumors and leukemia.

Naturally, you should ALWAYS consult your vet with ALL health concerns, but if your pet does have a serious health problem, ask your vet whether a vitamin supplement could help. And if your pet is already reasonably healthy, keep him/her that way by giving a vitamin supplement. It can’t do any harm! And you could well be ensuring that your pet has a longer life practically overflowing with health!
